Toronto District School Board

Advanced is pleased to have partnered with TDSB over the past few years on the implementation of Interactive Whiteboards, Response Systems and Projectors.

The Toronto District School Board (TDSB) was created on January 1, 1998 following the amalgamation of seven individual Boards of Education. TDSB serves almost 1.4 million electors of the City of Toronto. They are the largest school Board in Canada and among the largest in North America with over 550 schools that deliver quality education to our students at the elementary, intermediate, and secondary levels.

Without question it is has been extremely gratifying to see the results of this technology implementation, as our Education Consultants travel from school to school both providing implementation advice and professional development services.

Interactive whiteboards are a tool quickly becoming common place in the classroom and recent statistics certainly confirm this. Future Source Consulting, a leading independent global research company that has tracked interactive whiteboard sales for more than nine years, predicts that over 320,000 interactive whiteboards will be implemented in the United States alone in 2009 – the biggest year ever forecasted for the country. Canada it appears is following this trend with implementation of Smart Boards occurring in over 90% of Canadian school districts per Smart Technologies.

The announcement on August 11, 2009 that TDSB had won the National Technology Innovation Award for Elementary Education (NTIA), with the help of SMART Board™ interactive whiteboards and SMART Notebook software is confirmation that Advanced Education is on the right track with classroom technology implementation. This winning project, dubbed ‘SparkPlug,’ accelerated and enhanced traditional professional development for primary school mathematics teachers by incorporating education technology products into their teaching practice and making online resources available to the professional teaching and learning community.

Improvement in learning outcomes was confirmed by significantly increased performance on standardized tests with the help of an interactive whiteboard combined with professional development tying the technology to curriculum.

SMART Board interactive whiteboards and SMART Notebook software were used with other products to enrich the learning experience for grades 3 and 6 students. Improvement in learning outcomes was confirmed by significantly increased performance on standardized tests. The number of grade 3 students achieving at the highest level in mathematics increased by 44 percent, while the number of grade 6 students performing at the provincial level increased by 22 percent. The SparkPlug program involved 50 educators and 1,100 students at 14 elementary schools, using 30 SMART Board interactive whiteboards in the northwest area of the TDSB, the largest school district in Canada.
