ADVANCED CREATES IMMERSIVE VISUAL TRAINING FACILITY WITHIN TORONTO’S CENTENNIAL COLLEGE TO MAXIMIZE LEARNING OUTCOMES FOR HEALTH CARE STUDENTS
ABOUT CENTENNIAL COLLEGE
Centennial’s Health Studies programs are located in the new Morningside Campus, an impressive, open-architecture design situated next to the Rouge Valley Conservation Area in the east end of Toronto. The new campus offers superior lab facilities for all Health programs, including Nursing, Paramedic, OTA/PTA, Pharmacy Technician, Massage Therapist, Aesthetics, Spa Assistant and Complimentary Care. The extensive facilities have demonstrated their value not only to students of the College, but also to emergency-response organizations and hospitals from across the Greater Toronto Area, serving as the ideal environment for staging large-scale disaster simulation and other safety-related exercises.
Centennial College required a high-tech and dynamic AV solution for the clinical simulation area within their impressive new Morningside campus. The facility would act as a learning and professional development centre for new emergency workers and health care professionals to ensure they were properly trained for their mission-critical roles within the community.
The College required audiovisual equipment and software that could monitor, record and direct students who were participating in mock emergency response training. Centennial needed an experienced AV solutions provider who also understood the unique requirements of educational environments to install multiple areas, including the paramedic simulation room, mock ambulance room, control booth and several debriefing boardrooms.
THE ADVANCED SOLUTION
Centennial turned to Advanced to create and deliver state-of-the-art AV solutions that would enhance collaborative training within the facilities. The large installation included both video and audio recording equipment and software that would allow for intensive and interactive lessons and presentations.
In the paramedic simulation room, Advanced installed a PTZ high-resolution camera, an overhead, ceiling-mounted, omni-directional microphone and an in-ceiling loudspeaker to ensure all students could clearly hear and see lessons and instructional videos from anywhere inside the space. Inside the mock ambulance room, Advanced installed another PTZ camera, ceiling microphone and a wall-mounted loudspeaker.
The control booth consisted of four operator/instructor stations that each controlled a specific area. Each station needed to have complete functionality in many areas, including remote control of the cameras, recording of simulations and training sessions, live viewing, communication into each station via wired microphone, discreet two-way communication and the selection and sending of live audio and/or video recordings to the large debriefing room via ceiling-mounted projectors. Advanced designed and installed the control booth with Crestron touchpanels to allow for both live viewing and recording through each camera. The installation also allowed for future mobile/remote control operation from the debriefing area.
The debriefing area was also equipped with a 37” wall-mounted LCD monitor with speakers, to allow for recorded viewing of training sessions with live viewing from all simulation areas. The large debriefing area, consisting of 2 rooms, included a new PTZ camera, ceiling-mounted, omni-directional microphone and in-ceiling loudspeaker, all for the purpose of creating an interactive and collaborative environment to promote learning and teaching practice. All control software is via Crestron, a standard throughout Centennial College.
