10:00    Session 1: Introductory Session: “Getting Started”

This session has been developed for:

  • Administrators and teachers wanting to understand the power and potential of the SMART Board™ interactive whiteboard
  • Teacher with less than one year of experience using the SMART Board

Our “Getting Started” session has been designed specifically for novice SMART Board users.  We start with a short explanation of how to connect and operate the SMART board and follow up with a detailed examination of the rich tools and features of SMART Notebook™ Software.  Each of the tools will be examined in the context of supporting the development of literacy and numeracy skills through interactive learning.  Features we explore include:  pens, line tools, shapes, capture tools, cloner, text tools, and the reveal feature.  Most importantly, we will demonstrate how users can make immediate use of the 5400 gallery items to support activities already in place in your classroom.  The session ends with an examination of 2000+ lesson activities linked to Ontario curriculum expectations.

1pm - 3 pm     Session 2: Intermediate Session: “Reaching Higher”

Intended Audience:

  • Teachers with some experience using the SMART Board looking to create interactive content using sound, video, music, interactive websites
  • Administrators who have SMART Boards in their schools and want to see effective use of the SB as a learning tool

Spend an afternoon learning about some of the more advanced features of Notebook software and how to use these features to develop interactive activities that engage students using a sound, voice, video, multimedia.  We will also illustrate how to make lessons flow more smoothly with fewer interruptions when web sites and other files are launched.  Included in this session will be a brief introduction to SMART Senteo™ student response system and strategies for assessing student progress.  Finally, we will examine the “Lesson Activity Toolkit” as a resource for creating diagnostic and formative assessment activities.    

Speaker: John Palbom, Advanced Presentation Solutions

Each of the sessions will be lead by a special member of the Advanced Team, John Palbom, who has first hand experience not only training educators on technology, but also in tying technology to curriculum and the Ontario standards.  John, a teacher for 10 years with the Trillium board and now an Education Consultant for Advanced, has spent many years providing professional development to educators, the Ministry of Education, as well as being a Curriculum Consultant for a period of time.

Khoi has recently joined SMART and became their Education Consultant (EC) for the GTA and Southern Ontario.  He brings some great experience directly from the classroom and district level. Specifically, he has been a teacher within Toronto District for 7 years, where he also qualified for his Principals designation and consulted directly with textbook manufacturer Thomson Nelson on content and material creation suitable to match Ontario curriculum.
